The Virtual Forest CD's, produced by EcoLogik, are educational programs aimed at classroom audiences 5th grade through college. Unlike the average educational CD-rom, The Virtual Forest uses the computer to do things that no book could possibly accomplish. Using some of the most advanced in multimedia techniques, Each Virtual Forest displays views from inside a forest in 3 dimensions, and lets you rotate the view, look up or down---even spin around 360 degrees! In addition to giving a feel for what this forest type looks like, The Virtual Forest allows students to become familiar with basic forestry techniques as well as practicing their tree identification on over 45 trees of the central hardwood forest region using an illustrated dichotomous key. Not only can the student view the tree they are identifying, they can also move a branch of that tree in any direction to see all of the features, even zoom in on those tiny lateral buds! Also included are facilities for practicing sampling techniques, and some slide shows on various forestry topics (more suitable for secondary school than college). This would be a nice program to use before going out into the field.
